2nd indicator of 245, the digit 2, means: skip the first 2 characters of
subfield $a for sorting.
(The $ is not the code actually used in the file! It is ASCII 31). This example clearly shows that card production was the first job USMARC was designed for: the 1st author (for main entry and unit card heading) is in 100, the 2nd author, however, is underneath the card body in 700. |

This is the
only format catalogers know and use. Records are saved, however, in a different
format called Pica+. This has very different tags, and it has subfield
codes instead of punctuation.
Unusual: There's not a non-sort code but the @ marks the point where the sort string starts, like in 3000, 3001, 4000. The same is used to avoid name inversion (3000 and 3001) |
